Recreating the Nutcracker: Cristiano’s First Birthday Party

1/18/2020

Who needs decorations and party planner when you have Christmas!  Cristiano’s birthday is during the 12 days of Christmas so I planned this over the top party with a budget that did not break the nut—pun intended.

Christmas tree, check, garland, check, ok and totally free, but it was still a little sparse.   We watched Disney’s the Nutcracker and the Four Realms over and over until we figured out a plan.  Honestly, I was a struggling a bit, I had to tie in the roses somehow (from the monthly roses shots we did), but thanks to Anna and Tina who religiously watched this with me, they actually figured it out for me.  They said we had to do one room staged like the opening Christmas party at Clara’s Godfather’s house with the string game with gifts, we needed a flower room to tie in the roses, we needed a candy room, a snow room, and they wanted the fourth realm, but we ran out of time.

I went on Etsy and got some scores on Nutcracker themed plates, party favors, and decorations, it was so close to Christmas that they were already discounted due to arrival after Christmas. But I waited until after Christmas to hit the stores for total scores.  We filled the candy room with European candy from Home Goods, every Christmas item was ½ off, but what Home Goods and most non-church going folks don’t realize is Christmas starts on Christmas day, so thank you secular world.  Michael’s also had heavily discounted items helped us fill the room, we got candy garland and pink puffs to decorate the cabinets and chandeliers, string for the main room, and snow for the snow room.     Finally, we hit Trader Joe’s they have the prettiest roses and rose champagne—all at low prices, but luxury look of course.

We stayed up until 3am setting everything up, I am not exaggerating.  Thank goodness for Christmas break, I had Anna and Tina, we set up string game, put out all the roses, set up the candy room and it looked fab!

Day before the party I waived the flag and used Instacart for shopping. I also finally scored the birthday surprise—a nutcracker ballet performance.

But I did cook!  Mom’s stop catering, its so easy to cook, it is way less expensive, tastes better, less waste, I will never go back to catering. For appetizers, I had Italian lunchmeat and cheeses, chips, breadsticks, and dips.  I had made tomato sauce earlier in week, I made baked ziti and salad. I wanted Chris to grill sausage, but he cheated and ordered premade from Rex’s (the best fast Italian in Chicago—very Sicilian),  and my mom made Sicilian-style eggplant parmesan (different than what you are used to, so good).  During the party, I got a little too ambitious and wanted to serve courses, but didn’t prepare right so it was kind of a mess—almost ran out of plates. Next time I’ll use my grandmother’s china and pre-plate all the plates so I can. I love coursed meals at home! Do you?

While we were playing the string game where everyone could claim their mini-nutcrackers , swords and rat king hats (they may or may not have been left overs from the Peter Pan first birthday bash I threw for the older girls birthday), the ballerinas arrived. They started with the Arabian dance—my favorite—I almost screamed and clapped during the acrobatics, but didn’t want to make her fall! Then continued with dancing in the snow with the kids for the Waltz of the Flowers, they then divided the kids up into team Nutcracker and team Rat King where they got to use their swords (they loved that one), they learned how to bow and we got one last dance to Dance of the Reeds by the prima ballerina.  Can I tell you how much fun we had with this—someone asked if I was going to get him dancers for his 21st—LOL!

We finished with dessert, I ordered Cream Puff Cake from Italian Bakery in Addison—my favorite—the kids had cupcakes and my mom’s Christmas cookies. The espresso machine overflowed during the set up, but luckily my Dad and Chris cleaned it and the whole kitchen while the kids left with goody bags filled to brim with candy. And that is how you do a first birthday party.

Bright Lights, Big City? Nashville, Tennessee

For Chicagoans, Nashville is a really easy trip.  You can arrive by noon if you leave early enough and feel as if you have reached the Deep South--charming character and southern hospitality is endless here.

At first glance, as we drove through the streets of Nashville, we really thought it had a Milwaukee type of look. The streets were filled with a lot of older architecture that you just don’t see at home (darn Chicago Fire),  but do see in most cities. Their downtown area almost had as many cranes in the air as you see in Chicago, maybe a little more.   We knew, something special had been going on here.

Like all our trips, we run to the hotel, drop off our things, freshen up a bit, and hit the streets within twenty minutes or less. I always feel this is the best way to capture the vibe of the city. This time was no different. Do you do this?  We left a little later than we should have, but decided to hit the streets anyway.

After dropping our things off to the Thompson Hotel in a new neighborhood called the  Gulch, we thought maybe we had missed the mark neighborhood wise--it looked brand new and maybe a little homogenized. But as we explored more and talked to locals, we realized this neighborhood was the place to be! Frye boots store, Biscuit Love (with lines out the door and around the building), Sunda sushi (a Chicago favorite), Milk and Honey eatery, and even the hotels adjoining restaurant were it!

It was a little too late to get into too many places in the Gluch, so we ventured off to the the stunning lobby of the old post office turned hotel nearby and checked out the courtyard of Nashville's art museum.  Then there really was only place to go that late, so we headed straight to the "Times Square" of Nashville.  Here’s where the bright lights big city thing comes in, blocks and blocks of lit up bars and restaurants with a glow that rivaled New York City. Now we had 4 kids in tow, it was just a stroll, so we were not checking out any of the bars, but it was so fun to see.  It’s iconic and we’d never seen before.
The kids eyes lit up as bright as all the lights on the main strip. Who knew a mini Times Square was so close to Chicago!

The next morning we explored Nashville's Parthenon and French styled gardens and found an adorable store for children called Plaid Rabbit Gifts.

The next day I went on my usual mansion hunt—my favorite vacation activity to do—and I found Cheekwood mansion—estate of the family that started Maxwell House Coffee. On the way there, and to my pleasing, we got to drive through the ritzy part of Nashville and the homes and lands were stunning. Huge lots, classical architecture, formal gardens, had me stunned--another surprise that I didn’t think I’d see there. We also stopped an outdoor stair climb park next door to the estate (like Swallow Cliff I see everyone doing here), but frankly, this one seemed way more chic, way more classic and genteel—the southern style was contagious. Finally, we made it to Cheekwood and the hospitality of everyone there was remarkable. We fell for the southern charm and this stunning estate! So many children activities on the grounds, including a cute storybook exhibit with homes staged after books, like Charlottes web, Peter Rabbit—our favorite. But I made sure we raced to the for the manicured gardens and beautiful terraces, fountains, and pools on the estate grounds and even snuck in a tour of the mansion and stables.  And I suggest you race to Nashville and check out all their neighborhoods!

Stay:
Thompson Hotel: While there are many hotel options, we like the newness and decor at the Thompson.

Food:
Marsh House: I can tell you that we are here after we did our first night's arrival stroll.
Biscuit Love: Lines were too long for us to get in, but look at their Instagram, enough said.
Cafe at Restoration Hardware: Sometimes we get a little homesick for Chicago, so its nice to have something you are use to, its right next to Nashville's premier shopping center.

Leisure:
Cheekwood Estate: Stunning estate with gardens and grounds abutting a forest preserve, this estate likely coined the term views for days with how it was planned and set up. Both adults and children will be able to relax and unwind at this beautiful space.  This is a do not miss for sure.
The Parthenon: It may be a short trip from Chicago, but you can make believe that you are in Greece or France instead. Tours are available of the interior and all ages will love what the other parts of the park has to offer.
Plaid Rabbit Gifts: As you know, I am always on the hunt for clothing stores with classic children's clothing, this place does not miss the mark.  From the dresses to socks and all the accessories and accompanying items, you will be struggling to limit your options. The store has the most darling items, not to be missed.

We encourage you to explore Chicago and the Chicagoland area with our Law Firm at our Looks Leads Lifestyle events. I think you will be pleasantly surprised to check out the law firm and the spots we explore to help you increase your business!

Chicago: Italian Style

When you think of of Little Italy, usually Taylor Street comes to mind. But the neighborhood is so much more!

While Taylor Street does have a vibrant and lively feel full of restaurants, lounges, bars, and shops, the residential areas really do steal the show. The housing stock is beautiful and ornate, the green spaces via parks are large and lush.

We were invited by our newest child’s godparents to partake in a mass celebrating Italy’s Unification as a country and Ascension Thursday at Our Lady of Pompeii Shrine. Father Richard Fragomeni gave a beautiful sermon explaining all the items covered for the day, including a story about how Ascension Thursday is celebrated in Italy, where the cross is elevated from the floor out to through the roof and flowers are thrown down from the roof opening —grandeur, Italian style!

As mass ended, a procession was led through the area by the Italian band to Garibaldi Square—Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi led the efforts to Italian Unification. Commemorative words were spoken by leaders and Father Fragomeni while men dressed like Italian Military held flags of the unified provinces.

The ceremony ended by placing a wreath at the foot of the Garibaldi Statue, the crowd dispersed back to the Shrine. We were able to catch some of the beautiful Italian and Italianate architecture and the lush parks and fountains—filled with statues of noteworthy Italians. Admittedly, we stopped in our tracks several times to admire a few of the buildings, gardens, and parks. Rows and rows of beautiful stone and brick buildings with ornate masonry work and well manicured gardens was so refreshing to see. Our family friend pointed out the that some of the beautiful masonry work was in the style of Medici family symbols on buildings.

The weather this day was perfect, sunny, not too hot, not too cold. When we arrived back at the Shrine, it was pure joy to enjoy an outdoor lunch at the Shrine! We relaxed in the sunshine over lunch with a live DJ and the children even did a little dancing in between blowing bubbles, checking out the Ferraris, and playing tag! Just one of those perfect days!

Stay:
Airbnb: While there are many area options; here’s our favorite spot, a nearby Townhouse with killer views of the Chicago Skyline https://abnb.me/XM0SRyVqHX

Food:
Tufano’s: This family run spot really makes you feel like family when you are there. The food is mouthwatering, fresh and simple—as all Italian food is! Dine inside or out, kid and adult friendly. And they have their very own fountain to fit into the neighborhood. It really is a very Italian style neighborhood after all.
Pompei: Not to be confused with Our Lady of Pompeii Shrine, this fast casual spot (popular before fast casual was popular) serves up italian style square pizza slices that are to die for! Pop in for a slice. If you walked there, splurge on the Italian Chocolate sheet cake that is out of this world.

Leisure:
Jane Addams Hull House: What once was a series of buildings where Addams helped Italians and other ethnic groups establish themselves in America was unfortunately replaced by the University of Illinois at Chicago. What remains is one building that serves as a museum that is open for tours and is frequented by Chicago speciality tours.
National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame: If you love sports, this is the museum for you. Check out exhibits of famous Italian sportsmen. The museum is open for tours daily.
Parks: Garibaldi Square and Arrigo Park are our favorite, sumptuous and emerald green everywhere, broken up by fountains and statues of famous Italians. We loved it and so relaxing. To be in the City and enjoy these large lush spaces is surreal.

We encourage you to explore Chicago and the Chicagoland area with our Law Firm at our Looks Leads Lifestyle events. I think you will be pleasantly surprised to check out the law firm and the spots we explore to help you increase your business!

Once upon a time, three little princesses stumbled upon a magical courtyard in a big city. After exploring the courtyard, they wandered in and were greeted by a nice gent that gifted them toy dinosaurs and off they went to explore!

What they found was this pretty little french bistro with options for everyone. Vegan for mom with a delicious vegetable sandwich and our household staple, pizza for the kids and Dad. The stumbled into the spa area and spacious bathrooms and were able to catch some views from the building.

Besides the beautiful and magical amenities, we highly recommend that families check out this spot, it is very kid friendly. Their employees catered to the children's every need and wish. The cafe was very accommodating to kid requests--they even somehow let them have dessert while waiting for food--hey when in France? Lol. Waldorf Astoria staff really made the space come to life for the little ones.

Stay:
Why the Waldorf Astoria of course: For all the reasons listed above, beautiful, magical, and kid-friendly.

Food:
1. Spiaggia: If you are going to do Italian for dinner, this is IT! Lake views for days and days and days.
2. Neiman Marcus: Who does not love popovers and chicken broth? The girls and I cannot get enough.
3. Eataly: For a quick bite, we absolutely adore the foccacia counter--it is the only authentic italian spot in the area, so you HAVE to go. Also, their book selection, household selection, and grocery selection is our go to spot for all our Italian favorites, like Santa Maria Novella soaps and italian dishware and cookies.

Leisure:
1. American Doll Store: Renamed in our household to the Doll store, this 2 story mega American Doll store does not disappoint, bring your children and their dolls to enjoy some doll clothes or accessories, a blowout, and maybe some dessert--the cafe and restaurant serve the best dessert.
2. Disney Store: My kids believe this to be like visiting a Disney Park, except we can get in and out in 30 minutes or so--talk about kid and MOM friendly lol.
3. Oak Street Beach: When the weather is nice, no better beach in the Chicago, beach life, not too crowded, and best skyline views in the City. Bring some cash and rent chairs for the day and pretend you are a tourist in your own town.

We love exploring Chicago and this list will keep growing, we explore as a family, we explore through our Law Firm with our Looks, Leads, Lifestyle events at the prettiest places in Chicago and Chicagoland, be a tourist in your hometown, you'd be amazed at what you find. We welcome you and your family to our June 5th events, the 630pm event should be more kid friendly, hope to see you all there, reserve your seat at panzicalawoffice.com/blog!

Exploring Irving Park: Farmers Market - Chicago's Garden Center

Who needs a botanical garden when you have this gem in the neighborhood? We came across this beautiful lush garden space in Irving Park, Chicago.

Now we sometimes have driven by this spot, but walking across this beautiful garden store. Farmers Market--Chicago's Garden Center was a little different.  Its beauty draws you in and as we explored we were not disappointed.

The girls loved all the Melissa & Doug toys and the store was filled with lots of pretty little things by way of gifts or crafts for gardeners and homemakers--my favorites were all the garden scented hand soaps and lotions.

Farmers Market does not disappoint, they had all the seasonal flowers ready to plant and all the indoor and outdoor trees you'd ever need to beautify your home.  They had a lot of pretty garden pieces like columns and fountains to beautify your yard as well.  While we were there, a custom order from Florida arrived, over sized indoor palm trees that were absolutely gorgeous!

We hope that one day, after we defeat the negative neighbors and soon to be former alderman and building department that rejects to code plans, that we will be able to able to shop at this beautiful store.

If you visit Irving Park, here are my current recommendations of where to stay, where to eat, and things to do:

Stay:
1. The Hotel at Midtown: If you want access to Irving Park, this hotel is just a short drive down Elston Avenue which cuts through the Irving Park neighborhood.  The amenities at hotel are grand, tennis, indoor and outdoor pool, restaurants, roof decks, exercise classes and equipment, salon, store, and so much more.  It is like staying at a country club.
2. Hotel Zachary: This new hotel is directly across from Wrigley Field, so if you are visiting to catch a Cubs game and want some respite at this pretty garden center, come.
3. Airbnb: Lots of local Chicago residents in Irving Park have opened their homes up for you, check them out, over 316 listings for every price point.

Food:
Now that our beloved Sabatino's is closed, this is a tough one.  We would love more italian spots since in our opinion that is the BEST food.  Have to check out some first before we recommend, but here are some suggestions:
1.
Astoria Café & Bakery: This Serbian bakery has the prettiest desserts packaged like eye candy and even prettier on the mouth. Their ethnic food is also delicious.
2. Tuscan Hen Market: For amazing Italian style sandwiches and lite bites, this is the spot, amazing preparation and taste.
3. Cafe Beograd: One of our favorites for Nutella crepes and ethnic Serbian dishes.

Leisure:

 1. Wrigley Field: Now we are more a soccer family, but this is one of the oldest fields in the Nation, Irving Park is really close to the stadium and you will find the neighborhood residents covered in blue and red on game day.
2. Riverwalk: If you enter on Rockwell and Berteau (off of Irving Park) takes you through a secret garden and respite off the river.

We love exploring Chicago and this list will keep growing, we explore as a family, we explore through business with our Looks, Leads, Lifestyle events at the prettiest places in Chicago and Chicagoland, be a tourist in your hometown, you'd be amazed at what you find.
